One type is the northern gannet. It is the biggest seabird in the North Atlantic. It can have a wingspan up to 2 meters wide.

These birds are great hunters. They dive into the sea to catch fish. They dive from very high up. To stay safe, they have air sacs in their face. These sacs act like bubble wrap. They cushion the bird when it hits the water. Their eyes are far forward on their face. This helps them see distances well. This is called binocular vision.

Gannets live in large groups on coasts. They usually lay one blue egg. They do not have warm skin patches for eggs. Instead, they use their webbed feet to keep eggs warm. Most gannets take five years to grow up. Young birds are all black. They get more white as they get older.

Many northern gannets live in the United Kingdom. Two-thirds of the world's population lives there. The biggest group is on Bass Rock in Scotland. In 2014, there were 75,000 pairs there.
