This mushroom has a very interesting way it works. It grows a large, reddish-brown cap above the ground. Under the cap, it does not have gills like some other mushrooms. Instead, it has many tiny tubes. These tubes have small openings called pores.

When the mushroom is young, these pores look white. As they get older, they turn greenish-yellow. Tiny seeds called spores grow inside these tubes. The spores escape through the pores when they are mature.

Learning about this mushroom has a long history. A French botanist named Pierre Bulliard first described it in 1782.

He gave it the name we still use today. Other scientists like James Sowerby also studied it in 1809. Later, scientists used molecular phylogenetic analysis to study its DNA. This helped them see which mushrooms were truly B. edulis. They found that some mushrooms once thought to be the same are actually different species.

There are many interesting facts about its size and home.

This fungus grows in forests with many trees. It lives in both deciduous and coniferous forests. It forms a special bond with tree roots. It wraps its tissue around the roots to help the tree. This mushroom is found all over the Northern Hemisphere. It grows in places like Eurasia and North America. It does not grow naturally in the Southern Hemisphere. A huge one was even found in Scotland in 1995.

Many different cultures have special names for this mushroom. In Italy, it is called porcino. This name might come from how much pigs like to eat them. In Germany, it is called Steinpilz, which means stone mushroom. This name refers to how firm the flesh is.
