The devil's bolete looks similar but has a red stem and stains blue. The bitter *Tylopilus felleus* is another look-alike; it can be identified by its dark stem pattern and pinkish pores. Another mushroom, *Gyroporus castaneus*, is generally smaller and has a browner stem. By checking for the specific net-like pattern on the stem and the color of the pores, foragers can identify the true *Boletus edulis*.
