He is recognized for his immense success in major Thoroughbred competitions. Baffert has achieved several historic milestones in the sport of horse racing. He has won the Kentucky Derby six times, which ties the record held by Ben A. Jones. He also holds the trainer record for the Preakness Stakes with eight victories. Additionally, he has won the Belmont Stakes and the Kentucky Oaks three times each. His skill has earned him the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer four times.

Baffert's journey began on a ranch in Nogales, Arizona. His family raised cattle and chickens there. At age ten, his father purchased Quarter Horses for him to race. He practiced on a dirt track and later worked as a jockey. During his teens, he earned $100 a day in informal races. He eventually graduated from the University of Arizona. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the Race Track Industry Program. By age 20, he was already training horses at a farm in Prescott, Arizona.

His professional career saw rapid growth through careful management. He won his first race at age 17 in 1970. His first official winner was Flipper Star at Rillito Park in 1979. In the 1980s, he moved to California to work at Los Alamitos Race Course. He transitioned to training Thoroughbreds full-time in 1991. He gained a major breakthrough in 1992 with a Breeders' Cup win by Thirty Slews. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas credited Baffert's success to an "extraordinary eye for a good horse."

Baffert has a storied history in the American Classic races. These are the most prestigious races for three-year-old horses. In 1997, he trained Silver Charm to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. In 1998, he became the first trainer to win the Derby and Preakness in consecutive years. He did this with the horse Real Quiet. In 2015, he achieved a massive milestone with American Pharoah. That horse won the Triple Crown, the first in 37 years. Baffert later trained the 2018 Triple Crown winner, Justify.

His statistical achievements are vast and significant. Baffert has trained horses that won 17 American Classic Races. He has also secured 19 Breeders' Cup race victories. In 2025, he passed D. Wayne Lukas for the most Breeders' Cup wins of any trainer. He holds 21 total Breeders' Cup wins. His success includes nine wins in the Santa Anita Derby and ten in the Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes. He also won the Del Mar Futurity seven times in a row from 1996 to 2002.

Despite his accolades, Baffert's career has faced significant controversy. Many of his horses have failed drug tests for various medications. Most violations involved exceeding allowable levels of legal therapeutic drugs. However, some cases involved banned substances. In 2019, the horse Justify tested positive for scopolamine. In 2021, the Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit was disqualified after testing positive for betamethasone. This specific violation led to various suspensions for Baffert. Churchill Downs suspended him through the end of the 2023 Spring Meet.

Baffert has also dealt with scrutiny regarding horse health. Between 2011 and 2013, seven horses in his stables died from sudden heart attacks. During that time, 36% of all cardiac-related horse deaths in California involved his horses. An equine medical director investigated the use of thyroxine, a thyroid hormone. The director concluded the medication did not cause the heart attacks. Since 2000, at least 74 other horses have died while in his stables. These deaths include animals not in active race training.

These challenges have shaped the public perception of his career. Some critics argue his management style creates issues. Others, like client Mike Pegram, suggest his strong personality makes him a target. Baffert has fought many legal battles regarding his suspensions. He has sued organizations like the New York Racing Association to contest their authority. His career remains a central topic in discussions about racing reform and ethics.
