He was a champion known for his incredible speed and stamina. He was the ninth winner of the American Triple Crown. This is a prestigious series of three specific races. Secretariat was the first horse to win this title in 25 years. He also set and still holds speed records in all three races. His victory in the Belmont Stakes is legendary. He won that race by 31 lengths. Many people consider it the greatest race ever run by a thoroughbred.

Secretariat had an exceptionally large chest. This helped his heart and lungs work with high efficiency. His hindquarters were his main source of power. He had a sloped croup that extended the length of his femur. This allowed his hind legs to reach far under his body during a stride. His stride length was measured at 24 feet, 11 inches during training. This combination of anatomy and biomechanics allowed him to out-gallop his competitors.

Secretariat's journey began with a unique breeding arrangement. His sire was the famous Bold Ruler. His dam was a mare named Somethingroyal. Penny Chenery managed Meadow Stable and arranged the breeding. The Phipps family owned Bold Ruler. They used a foal-sharing agreement to bring new blood to their program. This involved a coin toss to decide who received the foals. Ogden Phipps won the toss for a 1969 filly. However, Chenery received the 1970 foal that would become Secretariat. He was born on March 30, 1970, in Doswell, Virginia.

His racing career showed both early struggle and later brilliance. At age two, he finished fourth in his debut maiden race. He then won seven of his remaining eight starts. He won five stakes victories during this period. His only loss was in the Champagne Stakes. He actually finished first there but was disqualified to second due to interference. He earned the Eclipse Award for champion two-year-old colt. He was also named the 1972 Horse of the Year. This was a rare honor for such a young horse.

At age three, Secretariat reached his peak performance. He won the Triple Crown and set speed records in every race. His Kentucky Derby time remains the Churchill Downs track record for miles. His Belmont Stakes time is the American record for miles on dirt. In 2012, his Preakness Stakes time of 1:53 was officially recognized as a stakes record. He also won the Marlboro Cup, setting a world record at that distance. He proved his versatility by winning two major races on turf.

Secretariat was a massive commercial success. At the start of his three-year-old year, he was syndicated for $6.08 million. This was a record-breaking amount for the time. He won five Eclipse Awards throughout his career. He was also inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1974. The Blood-Horse magazine ranked him second on its list of the top 100 U.S. racehorses of the 20th century. He was only surpassed by Man o' War.

His influence continued long after he stopped racing. Secretariat was a very influential sire. He became the leading broodmare sire in North America in 1992. This means his daughters produced many successful offspring. Notable sires in his lineage include Storm Cat and A.P. Indy. Because of this, Secretariat appears in the pedigree of many modern champions. He lived until 1989, when he died at age 19 from laminitis. He remains an American icon and is honored with statues.
