In the tale, Bluebeard gives his new wife many keys. These keys open every room in his large palace. He tells her she must never enter one secret room. One day, the wife decides to see what is inside. She finds a terrible sight in that room. She tries to clean her key, but the blood will not come off. The key is magic.

Bluebeard finds out about the key. He becomes very angry. Luckily, the wife's brothers arrive just in time to save her. They stop Bluebeard from hurting her. The wife then takes over his riches and his castle. Some people think the story might come from old legends about real men from France. Others think it is just a story about curiosity.
