The word comes from German. It means a "double-walker." In many stories, a doppelgänger is a ghost. People often see it as a sign of bad luck.

Many cultures have ideas about spirit doubles. In Ancient Egypt, a spirit called a ka had the same feelings as a person. In Norse myths, a double called a vardøger performs actions before the person does them. In some Muslim countries, people believe in a spirit called a karin. This spirit can be helpful or harmful. It often has the same traits as the person.

Some people have reported seeing their own doubles in real life. The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley said he met his own double. The writer Goethe also had a strange dream about seeing his own figure. In 1893, a man named George Tryon was said to have walked through his home while he was far away at sea.
