The Black Stone is a famous rock set into the eastern corner of the Kaaba. The Kaaba is an ancient building in the center of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Most Muslims revere the stone as an Islamic relic. Some traditions say the stone dates back to the time of Adam and Eve. It was also respected in Arabia before the time of Islam. Some people think of it as a baetyl, which is a sacred stone.

Today, the stone looks like a dark, fragmented rock. It was once one single piece, but it is now broken into several parts. These seven or eight fragments are held together with cement. A silver frame surrounds the pieces and is fastened to the wall with silver nails.

The exposed face of the stone is about 30 by 40 centimeters. Some travelers have described its color in detail. One report said it has a black exterior and a grey interior with green bits inside. Many people believe it might be a meteorite from space, but scientists have not used modern tools to test it yet.

History tells us many stories about how the stone reached its place. In the year 605, Muhammad is said to have set the stone into the Kaaba's wall. This happened five years before his first revelation.

A story says that the clans of Mecca could not agree on who should place the stone. They waited for the next person to enter the gate to decide. That person was 35-year-old Muhammad. He used a cloth so each clan leader could hold a corner. This allowed everyone to share the honor of the task.

The stone has faced many hard times over the centuries. In the year 683, it was reportedly smashed by a stone from a catapult. Later, in 930, a group called the Qarmatians stole the stone. They took it away to Hajar for twenty-three years.

It was eventually returned to Mecca in 952 in a sack. The stone has also been targets of people trying to damage it. Because of this, the silver frames have been replaced many times. For a long time, Ottoman Sultans helped look after these frames. Some old frames are still kept in the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul.

The Black Stone is very important during the Hajj pilgrimage. Muslim pilgrims perform a ritual called tawaf. They walk around the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction.

Many people try to kiss the stone to follow the example of Muhammad. Because the crowds are so large, it is often too hard to touch it. Many pilgrims instead point toward the stone with their right hand. This helps them keep count of their circles. Even if they do not touch it, the stone remains a special symbol for them.
