This work started a new style called Suprematism. This name comes from a word meaning "perfected." Malevich wanted to free art from the real world. He wanted to focus only on shapes and colors. He wanted people to feel deep emotions from his work. The painting was a huge breakthrough for him. He was so excited that he could not eat or sleep for a week!
