Birth order is the order in which children are born into a family.

Some people believe this order changes who you are. They think it affects your personality or how you think. Scientists have studied this idea for a long time. They want to know if being the oldest or youngest matters. This topic is very popular in books and movies. It is also a big topic in science.

One famous thinker named Alfred Adler had many ideas about this. He lived from 1870 to 1937 and was a psychiatrist. Adler believed birth order leaves a lasting mark on a person. He said firstborns might feel less special when a new baby arrives. He called this being "dethroned." He also thought middle children might feel ignored by their parents. Younger children or only children might be pampered or spoiled.

Modern scientists often disagree with those old ideas. They use tests to measure the "Big Five" personality traits. These traits include openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Most recent research shows birth order does not change these traits. A man named Frank Sulloway suggested otherwise in his 1996 book. He thought firstborns were more dominant and less open to new ideas. However, many other researchers found almost zero effect on personality.

Some studies look at intelligence instead of personality. Some tests show firstborns might score slightly higher on verbal tests. This might happen because of a "tutor effect." This happens when an older sibling teaches a younger one. Robert Zajonc suggested firstborns spend more time with adults. This may help their brain development. But it is hard to prove this is only because of birth order. Family size and wealth can also change these test scores.

There is also a theory about how men grow up. It is called the fraternal birth order effect. This theory says having more older brothers might change a man's sexual orientation. Some studies say each older brother increases these odds by 33 percent. Other large studies say the effect is only 15 percent. Scientists think this might be a biological thing in the mother. They are still studying these facts to find the truth.
