Birth order is the order you are born in your family.

Some people believe birth order changes your personality. A man named Alfred Adler thought this was true. He said firstborn children might feel less special when a new baby arrives. He thought middle children might feel ignored. He also thought only children might be pampered.

However, many modern scientists disagree. They study the "Big Five" personality traits. These are ways to measure how people act. New research shows birth order does not change these traits. Many studies found almost zero effect on personality. Some scientists think people just look for patterns that are not there.

There are other things to study. Some tests show firstborns might score higher on intelligence. This might happen because they spend more time with adults. This is sometimes called a "tutor effect." There is also a theory about men. It says having more older brothers might change a man's sexual orientation. This is called the fraternal birth order effect. Scientists are still studying these ideas to find the truth.
