Bird wing

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A bird wing is a special pair of limbs. These limbs help birds move through the air. They use feathers to create lift and thrust. This allows many birds to fly.

Some birds do not fly at all. Land birds like the moa have very small wings. Other birds like penguins use wings as flippers to swim.

Inside the wing, there is a clever bone structure. It starts at the shoulder with the humerus bone. Next is the forearm with the ulna and radius bones. The hand is very different from a human hand. Many bones have merged to form the carpometacarpus. Three fingers attach to this part.

One finger has a group of feathers called an alula. These feathers work just like the slats on an airplane.

Scientists have studied these finger bones for 150 years. There is a big debate about which fingers they are. Some data says they are fingers 1, 2, and 3. Other data from embryos says they are fingers 2, 3, and 4. This is a strange mystery in science. Most likely, the finger buds follow a different genetic program. This makes the bones look like one set but act like another.

Wing shape changes how a bird flies. Elliptical wings are short and rounded. They help birds like the blue jay move through thick trees.

High-speed wings are pointed and short. Ducks use these for fast flight. The peregrine falcon is very fast. It can dive at 242 mph.

The spine-tailed swift has the fastest straight flight at 105 mph.

Other wings are built for long trips. High aspect ratio wings are long and thin. They help birds like the roseate tern fly for a long time.

Large birds like eagles or vultures use soaring wings. These wings have slots at the tips. These slots capture energy from the air to help the bird glide.
