In this game, players try to match numbers on their special cards. A person called the caller picks numbers at random for everyone to hear. Players use markers, sometimes called daubers, to mark their numbers quickly. When a player makes a winning pattern, they shout "Bingo!" to let everyone know. The caller then checks the card to make sure the win is real.

People play to win prizes or large jackpots. It is also a way for communities to gather and have fun.

Most bingo cards use a grid of 25 squares. These squares are set in five rows and five columns. The columns are labeled with the letters B, I, N, G, and O. Each letter has its own set of numbers. For example, the B column only uses numbers from 1 to 15. The O column uses numbers from 61 to 75. The very middle square is a "free space." This means it is already filled in for you.

To win, you might complete a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line. Some games use harder patterns, like a "postage stamp" square or a "blackout" where you cover every number.

This game has a very long history that started in different ways. A game called lotto was played in Italy around the year 1530. Later, in the 1700s, a version called Tombola began in Naples, Italy. In 1778, a French game named Le Lotto used 90 numbers. In the 1920s, a man named Hugh J. Ward helped make the modern game standard. He worked at carnivals in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area.

Another man named Edwin S. Lowe helped make bingo very popular. He saw people playing a game called "Beano" at a carnival near Atlanta in 1929. He brought the game to New York, and people loved it.

Bingo has changed a lot since it first became popular. During the Great Depression, Catholic churches used bingo to raise money. In 1977, Mark L. Gitlin designed an electronic system with a large flashboard. Later, he and his wife, Mitzi Schafer Gitlin, created complete electronic bingo systems. These systems were used in many places, including Las Vegas and even in Japan and Germany.

Today, many halls use computers to pick numbers using something called a random number generator. Some places still use old-fashioned ways, like a cage filled with wooden balls or air to blow ping pong balls. These different methods all help make sure the game is fair and random.

Many people use bingo for more than just games. Teachers often use it in American schools to help students learn. Instead of numbers, they might use words or math problems on the cards.
