At first, they played specific roles that were common in vaudeville. Williams often played a slick character, while Walker played a victim. Later, they switched these roles to surprise their audiences. Williams became known for playing a slow-moving, deep-thinking person. He was a master of using his face and body to make people laugh. One reviewer said he could make people laugh with just a tiny movement.

Their work helped change how Black performers were seen on stage. They used the cakewalk, a popular dance, to show their skill.

Even though they used burnt cork, which was a common practice then, they used it in a clever way. They often dressed very neatly in their real lives to show class. This was a contrast to the silly characters they played in shows. In 1901, Williams also recorded music for the Victor Talking Machine Company. His song "Good Morning Carrie" became a very big hit that year. He was the best-selling Black recording artist before the year 1920.

Williams reached a huge milestone on the Broadway stage.

In 1902, he and Walker debuted a musical called *In Dahomey*. This show was very special because the whole cast was Black. It was the first musical like this to play at a major Broadway theater. The show featured music by Will Marion Cook and lyrics by Paul Laurence Dunbar. Williams even used an old book about Africa to help inspire the show. He wanted to show the deep history and dignity of the continent. His success helped open doors for other Black performers in the future.

Throughout his thirty-year career, Williams faced many hard times. He lived in a time when there was a lot of racial inequality. He even experienced the danger of a city riot in New York in 1900. Despite these struggles, he remained a beloved star for all kinds of audiences. He married Lottie Thompson, a singer, and they were a very happy couple. They cared for many children, including three of Lottie's nieces. A fellow performer once called him the funniest man he ever saw. He also said Williams was the saddest man he ever knew.
