Leno was a very important part of the London theater scene. From 1888 to 1904, he acted in big Christmas shows called pantomimes. These shows were held at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. He often played "dame" roles, which are funny female characters.

He was also a great performer in musical comedies. In 1901, he performed a sketch called "Huntsman" for King Edward VII. The King was so happy with the show that people called Leno "the king's jester."

He was also known for being very kind and helping other performers in need.

Even though he was a superstar, his life had many hard parts. He struggled with money when he was young. Later in life, he dealt with health problems caused by alcoholism. This made it hard for him to be seen as a serious dramatic actor. Because he was so famous for being funny, people would not cast him in Shakespeare plays. He had a mental breakdown in early 1903 and stayed in an asylum for a short time. He died in 1904 at the age of 43.

He is still remembered today as a master of comedy.
