Bernard Peyrilhe was a famous surgeon from France. He lived from 1735 to 1804. He is known as a founder of experimental cancer research. This is the study of how cancer grows and works.

He was born in a place called Pompignan. Later, he became a lecturer at the Paris School of Surgery. His work helped doctors understand a very hard sickness.

In 1773, Peyrilhe wrote a very important essay. He entered a contest in Lyon. The contest asked the question, "What is Cancer?". His essay won a prize from the Academy of Letters and Fine Arts.

He wrote about how the disease grows and how to treat it. He also thought a "virus" caused the sickness. Back then, a virus meant any substance from a body that could spread a disease. He believed this substance caused wasting in the body.

Peyrilhe tried to test his ideas with an experiment. He took fluid from a human breast cancer. He made an emulsion from this fluid. He then injected it into a wound on a dog.

He kept the dog at his home to watch it. The dog developed an abscess at the spot. The dog howled so much that the servants drowned it. Today, we know this experiment would not work well. A body's immune system sees cells from other species as foreign. The immune system then destroys those cells.

He was also a very brave surgeon. In 1773, he performed a radical mastectomy. This is a big surgery for breast cancer. He removed the pectoral muscle and the axillary lymph nodes.

He knew this surgery was very risky. He felt the risk was worth it. He believed the disease would cause death without it. He also used carbolic acid to treat ulceration. This acid was a new discovery at that time.

Peyrilhe's work connects to how doctors help people today. He looked for ways to stop a disease from spreading. He used new tools like carbolic acid to heal skin sores. His ideas about surgery changed how doctors treat cancer.

He was a leader in the 18th century. His studies helped start the way we look at cancer now. We still study the way cells and the immune system work.
