Doctors who work in this field are called oncologists. They do many important jobs to help people. They look for signs of sickness early. They also help people feel better during treatment. They even study new ways to stop cancer through research.

Finding cancer is a careful, step-by-step process. First, a doctor looks at a person's medical history. They check for signs like fever or weight loss. Next, they use tools to see inside the body. These tools include X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans. Sometimes, they use an endoscopy to look inside. A very important step is a biopsy. This is when a doctor removes a tiny piece of tissue. A specialist called a pathologist then examines it to find the truth.

People have known about cancer for a very long time. We find evidence of it in ancient Egypt. The Edwin Smith papyrus from 3000 BCE describes a tumor. It calls a breast tumor a bulging growth. Later, a Greek doctor named Galen lived from 130 to 200 CE. He was the first to use the word "onkos" for tumors. This old word is why we use the names oncology and oncologist today.

There are many ways to treat the disease. Surgery can sometimes remove a tumor entirely. If it cannot be removed, doctors might use "debulking." This means they try to reduce the amount of tumor tissue. Other treatments include chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Chemotherapy uses medicine to fight the sickness. Radiotherapy uses special rays. Some treatments, like hormone manipulation, are used for breast or prostate cancer. New research also looks at cancer vaccines and immunotherapy.

Oncology is a huge field with many different paths. Some oncologists focus on surgery. Others focus on radiation or medicine. There are even special groups for different people. Pediatric oncology is for children. Geriatric oncology is for elderly people. Some doctors focus on specific parts of the body. For example, neuro-oncology focuses on the brain. Others look at the skin, the liver, or even the eyes. This helps every patient get the best care possible.
