Doctors who study cancer are called oncologists. People found cancer in Egypt long ago. An old paper from 3000 BCE described a tumor. A tumor is a bulge or a bump on the body. A Greek doctor named Galen used a special word for it. His word helps give us the name oncologist today.

Doctors use many ways to find cancer. They look at a person's history. They might see signs like fever or weight loss. They use tools like X-rays or CT scans to see inside. They may also do a biopsy. This is when a doctor takes a tiny piece of tissue. A specialist called a pathologist looks at it to be sure.

There are many ways to treat cancer. Some doctors use surgery to remove a tumor. Others use chemotherapy. This is a type of medicine. Doctors also use radiation. This uses special rays to fight the sickness. Some doctors focus on one area. For example, pediatric oncology is for kids. Others help the elderly or focus on the brain.
