Bernard Peyrilhe was a surgeon in France. He lived a long time ago. He was a leader in cancer research. This is the study of how cancer grows.

In 1773, he won a prize for an essay. He wrote about how the disease works. He thought a "virus" caused it. Back then, a virus was any substance from a body. It could spread a sickness.

He tried to test this idea. He used fluid from a tumor. He put it into a wound on a dog. The dog got very sick.

Today, we know why this did not work. A body's immune system fights cells from other species. This system is like a tiny guard. It stops things that do not belong. Peyrilhe also found new ways to help. He was the first to use a big surgery for breast cancer. He removed the muscle to stop the disease. He also used carbolic acid to heal skin sores. This acid was a new discovery then. His work helped doctors learn much more.
