He studied how living bodies work. This field is called physiology.

Bernard had many big ideas. He spoke about the milieu intérieur. This means the "internal environment." He said the body stays steady even if the outside world changes. This idea helps us understand homeostasis. Homeostasis is how a body keeps itself in balance.

He also studied how parts of the body make things. He found that the pancreas helps with digestion. He also found that the liver makes sugar. This work helped doctors learn about diabetes.

Bernard used a way of testing called vivisection. This means doing experiments on living animals. Many people did not like this. His own family was upset by his work.

He was a very important teacher. He worked in many places in Paris. He even wrote plays for fun. When he died in 1878, France gave him a big funeral.
