He was both a doctor and a philosopher. A philosopher is someone who studies big ideas. He studied how we know things about science. This is called epistemology. He also studied biology, which is the study of life.

Canguilhem wrote two very important books. One book explored what is "normal" in medicine. He wanted to know how we define health. Another book was about the study of life. He did not think living things were just like machines. He believed life was more complex than a machine. He thought living things must react to the world around them to stay alive.

He was a great teacher at many schools. He helped many famous thinkers learn. One of his students was Michel Foucault. Canguilhem also worked in the French Resistance. This was a group that fought back during World War II. He used the name "Lafont" while he worked as a doctor there. He won many awards for his work. These awards helped show how much people valued his ideas.
