He worked as both a doctor and a philosopher. As a philosopher, he studied big ideas about knowledge. This specific study is called epistemology. He focused on the philosophy of science, especially biology. He wanted to understand how we learn about living things. His work helped change how people think about life and science. Many people still study his ideas today.

Canguilhem had many unique ideas about biology. He did not think living things were just like machines. He argued that life is more than just parts working together. Instead, he believed organisms must interact with their surroundings to survive. This idea is called vitalism. He believed living things are more than the sum of their parts. He wanted to show that biology is a special kind of science. It is not just a simple physical or chemical study.

His life was full of important events and hard work. He entered the École Normale Supérieure in 1924. During this time, he studied alongside famous people like Jean-Paul Sartre. In 1941, he began working at the University of Strasbourg. He earned his medical doctorate in 1943 during World War II. During the war, he joined the French Resistance. He used the secret name "Lafont" while serving as a doctor. This was a very brave thing to do.

Canguilhem wrote several books that changed the world of ideas. His book "Le Normal et le Pathologique" came out in 1943. It looks at how medicine defines what is normal. Another major book was "La Connaissance de la vie" in 1952. He also wrote about the history of the concept of "reflex." In 1983, he won the Sarton Medal for his work. He also received the médaille d'or from the CNRS in 1987. These awards show how much he helped the history of science.

He was also a very powerful teacher in France. He held important jobs at the Sorbonne and in Strasbourg. Many famous scholars were his students or friends. Michel Foucault was one of his most well-known students. Other thinkers like Jacques Derrida and Louis Althusser were also influenced by him. Althusser even said he owed a huge debt to Canguilhem. His teaching helped shape how many people study science and society today. He was a mentor to a whole generation of thinkers.
