He changed how movie music was made. Many people in Hollywood used one style in the 1930s. Herrmann used his own special rhythms and sounds instead. This made his work feel very different from others. He believed that making music for an orchestra was like a person's thumbprint. He said it was like adding color to a painting. This helped his music stand out to every listener.

Herrmann used many clever ways to tell stories with sound. He used short musical ideas called leitmotifs to help the story move. In the film Citizen Kane, he used two main motifs. One was a four-note sound played by brass instruments. This represented the power of the main character. The other was a sound played on a vibraphone. This sound was a clue to a secret in the story. He also learned how to use very short pieces of music. These small sounds helped bridge different scenes together in radio and film.

His life in music began in New York City. He was born Maximillian Herman to a Jewish family. His father encouraged him to play the violin. Later, he studied at New York University and the Juilliard School. He even formed his own orchestra when he was twenty. He became a famous conductor for the CBS Symphony Orchestra. He loved to play music by people that others ignored. He helped many people hear new and unusual songs for the first time.

Herrmann worked with some of the biggest names in history. He worked with director Orson Welles on films like Citizen Kane. In 1941, he won an Academy Award for The Devil and Daniel Webster. He also worked with director Alfred Hitchcock on nine different films.

Some of these movies include Vertigo and North by Northwest. For the movie Psycho, he used only string instruments. This choice helped create a feeling of tension and doom. He even appeared as a conductor in The Man Who Knew Too Much.

His music reached people through many different ways. He wrote music for radio shows like The Twilight Zone. He also wrote music for many fantasy films. Even after he passed away in 1975, his work stayed important. Later directors made movies that were inspired by his style. His last score was for the film Taxi Driver in 1976. People still study his work to see how he used sound. He showed the world that music is a vital part of every story.
