He was born in 1888 in Vienna, Austria. People often call him "the father of film music." This is because he helped start the tradition of writing music for movies. Steiner learned music in many different ways. He took piano lessons from a young age. He even studied with the famous composer Gustav Mahler. He learned to play many instruments like the violin and trumpet. However, the piano was his favorite instrument. He also studied how different sounds fit together. This is called harmony and counterpoint. Knowing how every instrument works helped him lead big orchestras. He used these skills to create beautiful music for the stage and screen.

His musical journey began very early in his life. He was a child prodigy, which means he was exceptionally talented. He conducted his first operetta when he was only twelve. By the age of fifteen, he was a professional.
