Cerf’s professional journey began with a focus on journalism and business. After graduating from Columbia University in 1920, he worked as a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune. He also spent time working in a Wall Street brokerage. Later, he became a vice president at the publishing company Boni & Liveright. In 1925, Cerf and his partner Donald S. Klopfer took a major step. They purchased the rights to the Modern Library series from Boni & Liveright. This acquisition served as the foundation for their independent business. They eventually named their new company Random House.

Random House grew through Cerf’s unique ability to manage literary talent. He used his skills to secure contracts with many legendary writers. These included William Faulkner, Eugene O'Neill, and Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss. The company even used a logo of a small house. This logo was designed by Rockwell Kent, a fellow Columbia alumnus. Cerf also published Ayn Rand’s famous novel, Atlas Shrugged. Although he disagreed with her philosophy of Objectivism, he respected her brilliance. This relationship shows how Cerf valued the art of writing itself.

One of Cerf’s most significant achievements involved a landmark legal battle. In 1933, he won the court case United States v. One Book Called Ulysses. This case challenged government censorship regarding the book Ulysses by James Joyce. Previously, parts of the book had been labeled as obscene. Cerf arranged a test case to challenge the implicit ban on the work. He arranged for a copy to be seized by the United States Customs Service. This allowed him to fight the legal restrictions in court. After winning, he became the first person to publish the unabridged version in the United States.

Beyond publishing, Cerf was a master of humor and wit. He authored many books filled with jokes, puns, and anecdotes. Some notable titles include Try and Stop Me, published in 1944, and Shake Well Before Using, from 1949. He also compiled various anthologies of stories and humor. His talent for comedy extended to his role on the Peabody Awards board. He served as a juror for the board from 1946 to 1967. He even held the position of chair juror starting in 1954.

His presence on television helped make him a recognizable figure in American culture. Even the Sesame Street puppet show created a parody of him called "Bennett Snerf."

Cerf’s personal life was also deeply connected to the world of entertainment. He married actress Phyllis Fraser, who was a cousin of Ginger Rogers. Together, they had two sons, Christopher and Jonathan. They maintained a residence in Manhattan and a country estate in Mount Kisco, New York. Cerf died of natural causes in Mount Kisco on August 27, 1971, at age 73. His legacy lives on through the continued success of Random House. Today, his name is honored on streets like Bennett Cerf Drive in Maryland. His life remains a testament to the power of books and laughter.
