Benchmarking

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Benchmarking is a way for groups to do their best work. It is the practice of comparing business processes and results to the very best in an industry.

Companies look at specific things like quality, time, and cost. They use indicators to measure how they are doing. One indicator might be the cost for a single item. Another might be how much work is done in a set time. By comparing these numbers to others, a company can see how well it is performing. This helps them make plans to improve or change how they work.

There is no single way to do benchmarking. Many different methods have been created over time. One person, Robert Camp, developed a 12-stage approach in 1989.

This method starts by selecting a subject and defining a process. Then, the group finds potential partners and data sources. They collect the data and look for a gap between their results and the target's results. Next, they look at the differences in how processes work. They set a goal for future performance and communicate it. Finally, they implement the changes and review the results to see if they worked.

People have been using these ideas for a long time. An early example is the Standard EDP Reports from the Auerbach Corporation in 1962.

In 1994, a technical journal called Benchmarking was first published. That same year, a book called Benchmarking for Competitive Advantage by Boxwell was released. In 2008, a group called The Global Benchmarking Network commissioned a large survey. This network represents benchmarking centers in 22 different countries. These history points show how the practice has grown into a major tool for management.

There are many different types of benchmarking used today. Some companies use performance benchmarking to check their productivity.

Others use strategic benchmarking to watch how different groups compete. Technical benchmarking is very common in the car industry. In this type, workers might take a car apart to study its systems. This is called reverse engineering. This helps them design new products that meet what users expect. Some companies even use energy benchmarking to compare how much energy they use in buildings or processes.

Benchmarking is a lot like how students check their progress. In schools, teachers use benchmark assessments to monitor how students are learning.

These are short tests used at different times during the school year. Just as a student uses a test to see what to study next, a company uses benchmarking to see where to improve. Companies can also do this internally by comparing different teams in the same building. Or, they can do it externally by looking at other companies. Both ways help people learn how to reach their goals.
