Enterprise resource planning, or ERP, is a way for big organizations to manage their work. It is a type of software that helps a company stay organized.

Instead of having many different tools, a company uses one big system. This system collects and stores data from many different activities. It helps businesses plan for the future by looking at what they will need. This might include finding enough workers or getting new machines. By using ERP, a company can work much more efficiently.

An ERP system works by using a shared database. A database is a central place where all the information is kept.

Different parts of a company, like sales or accounting, all put their data into this one place. This allows information to flow easily between different departments. For example, the manufacturing team can see what the sales team has promised to customers. The system tracks many things at once, like cash, raw materials, and worker payroll. This helps everything stay updated in real time.

History shows how these systems have changed over many years. The term ERP was first used by a firm called Gartner in the 1990s.

Before this, companies used older systems for specific tasks. Some focused on material planning or manufacturing resources. By the mid-1990s, ERP systems grew to handle all the main parts of a business. In the year 2000, a new version called ERP II was introduced. This version used the internet to help companies work with outside partners like suppliers.

There are many different parts of an ERP system called modules.

Each module handles a specific job for the company. A financial module manages money and taxes. A human resources module helps with hiring and training staff. There are also modules for manufacturing, order processing, and managing supply chains. Even governments use a version called Government Resource Planning, or GRP. In 2021, the global market for these systems was worth about $35 billion.

Using an ERP system is a lot like a conductor leading an orchestra.

Without a conductor, each musician might play at a different speed. In a business, different departments might work without knowing what others are doing. The ERP system acts as the conductor to keep everyone in sync. It connects hardware, software, and people so the whole organization works together. Today, many of these tools even work on mobile devices. This helps people stay connected to their work from almost anywhere.
