A database is a way to keep related information organized.

To work with this information, we use a special software called a database management system, or DBMS. The DBMS acts like a helpful manager for the data. It lets users enter new facts and find the ones they need. It also helps people change or delete information. This software makes sure everything stays organized and safe. When you use the database and the DBMS together, it is called a database system.

There are four main ways a DBMS works to manage data. First, it handles data definition. This means it creates the rules for how data is organized. Second, it handles updates. This is how the system adds, changes, or removes the actual facts. Third, it handles retrieval. This is when a user asks a specific question, called a query, to find certain information. Finally, the DBMS handles administration. This part monitors users and keeps the data secure from errors or system failures.

Before computers were common, people used other ways to store data. They often used index cards to keep lists. People used these cards for recipes or shopping lists at home. Schools used them as flash cards for learning. In businesses, they kept notes and contact information on cards. Professional indexers even used these cards to make book indexes. This changed in the 1980s and 1990s when indexing software was invented.

Computer scientists have developed many ways to structure data over time. In the mid-1960s, magnetic disks allowed for direct access to data. This was much faster than using old magnetic tapes. In 1970, a man named Edgar F. Codd proposed a new idea. He suggested the relational model, which organizes data into tables with rows and columns. This became very popular in the 1980s. Most relational databases use a language called SQL to talk to the data. By the early 1990s, these systems were used everywhere.

Today, we use many different types of databases depending on the job. Relational databases are still very common for many tasks. Some big names you might hear are IBM Db2, Oracle, MySQL, and Microsoft SQL Server. In the 2000s, a new type called NoSQL became popular. These use different languages and are good for different kinds of data. Some databases are small and live on one computer. Huge databases can live on computer clusters or in the cloud. This helps them handle massive amounts of information very quickly.
