Data can be many things, like names or numbers. To use a database, we need a special tool. This tool is called a DBMS. DBMS stands for database management system. It is software that helps us work with the data.

The DBMS lets us add new facts. It also helps us find and change them. It can even keep the data safe from errors.

In the past, people used index cards to keep lists. They used them for recipes or school notes. Now, we use computers. Small databases can stay on one computer. Big ones use computer clusters or the cloud.

There are different ways to organize data. Relational databases are very common. They use tables with rows and columns. Most of these use a language called SQL to find facts. Other types, called NoSQL, became popular later. They use different ways to talk to the data. This helps computers work fast with very large amounts of info.
