Project management is the way a leader supervises a team to reach specific goals.

Every project must work within certain limits called constraints. These main limits are the scope, the time, and the budget. Managers also try to use all their tools and people in the best way possible. The goal is to finish a complete project that meets what the client wants. Sometimes, a manager must even help change the client's plan to make it work.

A project is different from regular business work. Business as usual involves repetitive tasks that happen all the time. A project is a unique and temporary task with a clear beginning and end. It is designed to create a new product, service, or result. This work usually aims to bring a helpful change or added value.

Because projects are unique, they need special skills and different management strategies to succeed.

People have been managing big tasks for a very long time. Before the year 1900, architects and engineers managed their own building projects. Famous names like Vitruvius and Christopher Wren did this work.

Later, Henry Gantt became known as the father of planning and control techniques. He created the Gantt chart to help organize work. Another important person was Henri Fayol, who created five management functions. These ideas grew from the scientific management theories of Frederick Winslow Taylor.

In the 1950s, modern project management really began to grow. Two important mathematical models were created during this time. The Critical Path Method, or CPM, was made by DuPont Corporation and Remington Rand Corporation. CPM is used when the time for every task is known.

The Program Evaluation and Review Technique, or PERT, was made by the U.S. Navy and Lockheed Corporation. PERT is used when task times are uncertain or might change. These math tools helped many different companies manage their work better.

Today, project management is used in many different fields. The construction industry uses it to build roads and bridges. The IT industry uses it to create computer services and software.

Even people who translate languages use project management. All these different types focus on the "Iron Triangle." This means they must balance time, cost, and quality to be successful. If a project meets these three goals, it is considered a success.
