It was published in 1987. The story takes place in Cincinnati, Ohio, after the American Civil War. It follows a woman named Sethe and her daughter, Denver. They live in a house at 124 Bluestone Road. This house is haunted by a spirit. The characters believe the spirit is Sethe's eldest daughter. The book explores how people deal with very hard memories. It shows how families try to heal after great sadness.

The story works by mixing real history with a ghost story. Sethe and Denver live a quiet, lonely life. A man named Paul D arrives at their home. He tries to drive the spirit away from the house. Soon after, a young woman appears and calls herself Beloved. Denver believes this woman is her lost sister. As Beloved stays, she begins to take over Sethe's life. Sethe spends all her money and time on her. The characters must face the painful things they tried to forget. They learn how to be themselves again.

Toni Morrison based much of the story on a real person. This woman was named Margaret Garner. In 1856, Margaret escaped from slavery in Kentucky. She fled to the free state of Ohio to find safety. During her escape, she faced a very difficult choice. She wanted to protect her children from being enslaved again. Morrison found an idea for her book in an old newspaper. The article was from 1856 and described Margaret's life. Morrison used this to show the hard lives of enslaved women.

There are many important facts about this book. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988. It was also a finalist for the National Book Award. Some critics call it the best American fiction from 1981 to 2006. The book was even made into a movie in 1998. This movie starred the famous actress Oprah Winfrey. The book's dedication says "Sixty Million and more." This honors the many people lost during the Atlantic slave trade. It is a very powerful way to remember history.

You might know other stories about how history shapes people. Just like in history books, this novel shows real places and times. It uses a ghost to represent things that are hard to talk about. The book looks at how being a mother can be both beautiful and hard. It also shows how people find strength in their community. Even though the story is sad, it is about finding hope. It helps readers understand the deep effects of the past. By telling these stories, writers help us remember the truth.
