Emancipation Proclamation, September 22, 1862 (1919), by E.G. Renesch

It was published in 1987. The story is set after the American Civil War. It follows a woman named Sethe. She lived in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sethe was once an enslaved person. She and her daughter, Denver, live in a house that is haunted. They believe a spirit lives there. This spirit is the ghost of Sethe's eldest daughter.

The book is based on a true story. It is about a woman named Margaret Garner. In 1856, she fled from slavery in Kentucky. She tried to keep her children safe from being slaves again. This difficult history is a main part of the book. Morrison shows how slavery hurt people's minds and hearts. The story explores how families try to heal. It also looks at how people find their own selves again. *Beloved* won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988. Many critics call it one of the best American books. It was even made into a movie in 1998.
