Wolf Hall is a famous historical novel by the English author Hilary Mantel. It tells the story of a man named Thomas Cromwell. The book follows his life as he gains power in England. The setting is the 1500s, specifically from 1500 to 1535.

Readers enjoy the book because it feels very real. It shows how Cromwell rose from a simple background to become a leader. He worked in the court of King Henry VIII. The story captures a time of big changes in the country.

Writing this book was a huge job for Mantel. She spent five years researching and writing the story. She wanted her fiction to match the real history. To do this, she made a special card catalogue. She organized it by the names of the people in the book. Each card had notes about where people were on certain dates. This helped her make sure no one was in two places at once.

The story begins with Cromwell as a teenager. He ran away from home to find his fortune. By 1527, he was a lawyer and a father in England. He became a helper to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. The book shows how Cromwell dealt with many hard moments. He lost his wife and two daughters to a sickness. He also had to help the Cardinal when the King became angry.

Many people have praised this book since it came out in 2009. It won the Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. The book was even named one of the ten best historical novels. It is the first part of a trilogy. The second book is called Bring Up the Bodies. The final book is The Mirror and the Light, published in 2020.

This novel is different from other stories about this time. Some older plays showed Cromwell as a bad man. Mantel chose to show him as a talented and practical person. She wanted readers to feel like they were part of the King's group. The book has sold over one million copies on its own. The whole trilogy has sold about five million copies worldwide. It has been translated into more than 40 different languages.
