He was a lawyer and a statesman. A statesman is someone who helps run a country. He served as the chief minister to King Henry VIII. This means he was the king's most important helper. He held this big job from 1534 to 1540. He was a key part of the English Reformation. This was a time when the Church of England changed a lot.

Cromwell was very good at many things. He had a huge memory for facts. He could speak several different languages. He knew French and Italian very well. He also knew Latin and some Ancient Greek. He spent many years traveling across Europe. He worked in places like France and Italy. He even worked as a cloth merchant in the Low Countries. These travels helped him meet many important people.

Cromwell's life started in a small village called Putney.

He was likely born around the year 1485. His father, Walter, was a hardworking man. Walter was a farmer and a wool processor. He also ran a brewery and a tavern. His mother was named Katherine Meverell. Cromwell had two sisters named Katherine and Elizabeth. He grew up in a family that worked with trades.

As he grew up, Cromwell became very powerful. He helped King Henry VIII change his marriage. The king wanted to marry Anne Boleyn.

To do this, Cromwell helped the king break away from the Pope. The king became the head of the Church of England. Cromwell also helped change how the government worked. He created new ways to manage the country. He was even given high titles like Baron Cromwell and Earl of Essex.

However, being powerful can be a hard job. Cromwell made many enemies while he worked. One big mistake was helping the king marry Anne of Cleves.

The marriage did not work out well. It ended only six months later. Because of this, the king lost trust in him. In 1540, Cromwell was executed for treason and heresy. The king later felt very sad about losing him.
