The English Reformation was a major change for England.

It began in the 1500s. This time was part of a larger movement across Europe. Many people were debating how to practice Christianity. In England, the church was once part of the Catholic Church. This meant the Pope in Rome held the most power. The Reformation changed how the church worked and who led it. It also changed how the king and the church related to each other.

This change happened in several steps over many years. First, the king wanted to make big decisions on his own. He wanted to be the leader of the church in his own land. This meant he did not have to follow the Pope's rules. Then, the laws of the land were changed by Parliament. These new laws took power away from the Pope. Finally, the way people worshipped changed. Some people kept old Catholic ways. Others moved toward new Protestant ideas.

In 1527, Henry wanted to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. The Pope, Clement VII, said no to this request. Henry responded by breaking away from the Catholic Church. Between 1529 and 1536, the Reformation Parliament passed new laws. These laws made Henry the Supreme Head of the Church of England. He used this new power to take wealth from monasteries. This period is often called the Henrician Reformation.

Different leaders brought different ideas to the English church.

When Henry's son, Edward VI, became king, the church became more Protestant. A man named Thomas Cranmer helped lead these changes. Later, Queen Mary I became the ruler. She briefly brought the Catholic Church back to England.

Eventually, Queen Elizabeth I helped create a settlement. This helped establish the Church of England once again. These changes lasted for a very long time. Some scholars say the Reformation lasted into the 1700s.

These events changed how people lived and thought. Before the Reformation, most people followed the Catholic Church. They believed in many sacraments and rituals. New ideas from thinkers like Martin Luther spread through books. William Tyndale even made a Bible in English. This helped people read the scriptures for themselves.

Even after the main changes, people still had many debates. Different groups had different views on how to worship. These disagreements shaped the history of England for many generations.
