Dame Penelope Lively is a very famous British writer. She creates many different kinds of stories. Some of her books are made for children to enjoy. Other books are written for adults to read. She also writes non-fiction, which are true books about real life.

Her writing often explores how the past affects the present. She looks at how memories stay with people through time. This is a very important theme in almost all her work.

Writing stories can happen in many ways. Penelope writes novels, which are long stories. She also writes short stories. She has even written scripts for radio and television.

Some of her books for children use a special idea. They show how local history connects to the people living there now. Her stories might feel like a "time slip." This means the past and present seem to touch. However, her characters do not actually travel through time.

Penelope began her successful career writing for children. Her first book was called Astercote, published in 1970. She wrote more than twenty books for young readers.

One famous book is The Ghost of Thomas Kempe. She won the Carnegie Medal for this book in 1973. Another great book for children is A Stitch in Time. She won the Whitbread Children's Book Award for that one in 1976. Later, she became a well-known writer for adults too.

Penelope has won some of the biggest prizes in writing. She was a finalist for the Booker Prize in 1977. This was for her first adult novel, The Road to Lichfield. She was also a finalist again in 1984 for According to Mark. In 1987, she finally won the Booker Prize for Moon Tiger.

This story is about a woman's life in a hospital. She has also received many honors from the British government. She was made a Dame Commander in 2012 for her work.

Outside of writing, Penelope has many interests. She says that reading and gardening are her two main activities.

In 2023, a rose was named the Penelope Lively Rose. This rose has a medium-strong smell of fruit and old roses. She lives in London with many beautiful things. Her home holds paintings, woodcuts, and old Egyptian potsherds.

She also has a son and a daughter. Her life is full of art, history, and nature.
