Mahy loved the world of books and stories. Her father, Francis George Mahy, was a bridge builder. He told his children many adventure stories. These tales helped inspire her own writing later on. She started writing very early in her life. Her first published story was called "Harry is Bad." She wrote this when she was only seven years old. She even showed her stories to children in schools. She wanted them to know they could write too.

She spent much of her life working with books. Mahy trained to be a librarian in Wellington in 1956. She worked in Petone and in Christchurch. In 1976, she became the Children's Librarian at Canterbury Public Library. She eventually became a full-time writer in 1980.

In 2006, she won the Hans Christian Andersen Medal. This is a very big international prize for writers. It honors a lasting contribution to children's books. She was one of only thirty writers to win it. Her books were translated into many languages. These included Spanish, French, Japanese, and many more.
