Mahy loved telling stories. Her father was a bridge builder. He told her adventure stories when she was young. These tales helped her find her own way. She wrote her very first story at age seven. Later, she worked as a librarian. She even became a children's librarian in Christchurch.

She won many great prizes for her work. She won the Hans Christian Andersen Medal. This is a big prize for writers of children's books. She also won the Carnegie Medal twice.
