It sits right on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. The city is located at the mouth of Haulover Creek. This creek is a part of the larger Belize River. You can find the city along the Philip Goldson Highway. It serves as a very busy hub for the whole nation. It is the main port for shipping and trade. Large cruise ships often drop anchor just outside the port.

Local citizens even help move people from these ships to the land.

The city is divided into two main areas. The Northside is bounded by Haulover Creek. It includes the Fort George area in the east. The Southside reaches out to the outskirts and the port. There are also three main canals in the city. These are Haulover Creek, Burdon Canal, and Collet Canal. All of these run through the Southside area. You might see the Swing Bridge at Market Square. This is a special bridge that works by hand. It is the only one of its kind left in the world.

Long ago, the area was a small Maya settlement called Holzuz. English lumber harvesters founded the city as "Belize Town" in 1638. They chose this spot because it was near the sea. It was a good place to ship wood like logwood and mahogany. Many African slaves were brought here starting in 1707 to work in the forests. The city was the center of control for the British. Because of this, people used to say the capital was the colony. It stayed the capital until the government moved to Belmopan in 1970.

Life in the city can be quite intense due to the weather. The climate is a tropical monsoon type. This means it stays warm and humid all year. There is a long wet season from May through February. March is usually the driest month of the year.

The map shows that the city sits in low areas. This makes it easy for flooding to happen. Big storms called hurricanes have also hit the city. Hurricane Hattie in 1961 destroyed almost everything. Other storms like Hurricane Richard and Hurricane Earl also hit recently.

Today, about 63,999 people live in Belize City.

It is a place full of culture and learning. The city has more schools than any other place in Belize. Some schools are only for boys, like Saint John's College. Others are only for girls, such as Saint Catherine's Academy. People enjoy many local events like the Belize City Carnival. You can also visit the Museum of Belize to learn more. The city is a central place for air, sea, and road travel.
