It sits right on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. The city is located at the mouth of Haulover Creek. This creek is a part of the larger Belize River. You can find the city along the Philip Goldson Highway. It serves as a very busy hub for the whole nation. It is the main port for shipping and trade. Large cruise ships often drop anchor just outside the port.

Local citizens even help move people from these ships to the land.

The city is divided into two main areas. The Northside is bounded by Haulover Creek. It includes the Fort George area in the east. The Southside reaches out to the outskirts and the port. There are also three main canals in the city. These are Haulover Creek, Burdon Canal, and Collet Canal. All of these run through the Southside area. You might see the Swing Bridge at Market Square. This is a special bridge that works by hand. It is the only one of its kind left in the world.

Long ago, the area was a small Maya settlement called Holzuz. English lumber harvesters founded the city as "Belize Town" in 1638. They chose this spot because it was near the sea. It was a good place to ship wood like logwood and mahogany. Many African slaves were brought here starting in 1707 to work in the forests. The city was the center of control for the British. Because of this, people used to say the capital was the colony. It stayed the capital until the government moved to Belmopan in 1970.

Life in the city can be quite intense due to the weather. The climate is a tropical monsoon type. This means it stays warm and humid all year. There is a long wet season from May through February. March is usually the driest month of the year.

It serves as the nation's principal port and its primary financial and industrial hub. The city is located on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. It sits at the mouth of Haulover Creek. This creek is a distributary of the larger Belize River. The city is situated along the Philip Goldson Highway. It functions as a central hub for air, sea, and road travel. This makes it a vital part of the country's infrastructure.

The city's geography is defined by its low elevation and coastal position.

The map shows how the city sits in low-lying coastal zones. This position makes the area vulnerable to sea level rise. The city is also prone to flooding during the rainy season. Belize City is divided into two main geographic areas. The Northside is bounded by Haulover Creek and includes the Fort George area. The Southside extends to the outskirts and the port area. Three main canals run through the Southside: Haulover Creek, Burdon Canal, and Collet Canal.

Belize City has a tropical monsoon climate. This means the weather is very warm, hot, and humid throughout the year. There is a lengthy wet season that runs from May through February. The dry season only covers the remaining two months. Interestingly, March is the driest month with only 1 inch of rainfall observed. This is unusual for a tropical monsoon climate. Most cities with this climate have their driest month after the winter solstice. This means January would typically be the driest month instead.

The history of the city began long before its formal founding. It was once a small Maya settlement known as Holzuz. English lumber harvesters founded the area as "Belize Town" in 1638. They chose this location because it was a natural outlet for local rivers. They used these rivers to ship logwood and mahogany. Starting in 1707, the English brought thousands of African slaves to work in the forestry industry. The city was the center of British control for many years. Historians often noted that "the capital was the colony" because of this central role. Belize City remained the capital of British Honduras until 1970. At that time, the government moved to the new capital, Belmopan.

Natural disasters have significantly shaped the city's history. The city has been struck by two major hurricanes since 1900. The first was in 1931, and the second was Hurricane Hattie in 1961. Hurricane Hattie almost entirely destroyed the city. More recently, Hurricane Richard hit in 2010 and Hurricane Earl hit in 2016. Fires have also been a major challenge for the city. Large stretches of housing have burnt down in the Northside and Southside. Notable fires occurred in 1999 and 2004. The local fire department has been able to quench most of these fires.

Infrastructure and landmarks define the urban landscape.

The Swing Bridge at Market Square is a unique structure. It is the only functioning, manually operated swing bridge in the world. Other important bridges include the Belchina Bascule Bridge and the Belcan Bridge. St. John's Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in Belize. Construction began in 1812 and it was completed in 1820. The orange bricks used for the church arrived on British ships as ballast. It is the only Anglican cathedral outside of England where kings have been crowned. The city is also home to many cultural sites, including the Museum of Belize.

Today, Belize City is a bustling center of education and culture. According to the 2022 census, the city has a population of 63,999 people. It contains more educational institutions at every level than any other city in Belize. Some schools are single-sex, such as Saint John's College for boys. Others, like Saint Catherine's Academy, are for girls. The city's culture is similar to Caribbean capitals like St. George's. Residents participate in events like the Belize City Carnival in September. The city remains a vital, busy place for the people of Belize.
