Kingston is the capital and the largest city in Jamaica. It sits on the southeastern coast of the island. The city is located on the Liguanea plain. This is an alluvial plain near the Hope River.

The city grew because of a major natural disaster. In 1692, a massive earthquake devastated the town of Port Royal. Survivors of this earthquake moved to the Liguanea plains. They first lived in a tented camp on the seafront. This area was known as Colonel Barry's Hog Crawle. Sadly, about two thousand people died from mosquito-borne diseases during this time. The town only began to grow steadily after a fire destroyed Port Royal in 1703.
Kingston has undergone many different stages of development. By 1716, it was the largest town in Jamaica. In 1755, the governor tried to move government offices here from Spanish Town. Although there was some debate, the merchants successfully lobbied for the move. By 1780, the population reached 11,000 people. By 1788, the population had grown to 25,000. This was about one-tenth of the total population of the island. In 1872, the government officially transferred the administrative capital from Spanish Town to Kingston.
Natural disasters have shaped the physical look of the city. A large fire occurred in 1882.

The city is a massive hub for the Jamaican economy. Most economic activity in the country happens within Kingston. It serves as the island's main transportation hub and its largest seaport. Many multinational companies and financial institutions have headquarters here. Major industries include shipping, tourism, and apparel manufacturing. The seaport handles many international exports. These include bauxite, sugar, and coffee. The city also contains the highest number of schools, hospitals, and universities in Jamaica.
Kingston is home to a very diverse population. The majority of people are of African descent. Large minority groups include people of East Indian and Chinese descent. These groups arrived as indentured servants in the late 19th century. There are also minorities of European, Syrian, and Lebanese descent. The city is also home to a small Jewish population. Religious life is very varied. Most people belong to Christian denominations like Baptist or Anglican. There are also many Rastafari followers. Additionally, there are communities of Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims.
Modern Kingston continues to change through redevelopment. In the 1960s, the city gained international attention for reggae music. During the 1980s, many old buildings were demolished. Construction companies replaced them with hotels, shops, and offices. This helped develop the waterfront area. The city has also faced periods of unrest and crime. In 2010, an armed conflict occurred between the military and a drug cartel. This event drew significant international attention. Despite these challenges, Kingston remains the vital heart of Jamaica.
