The city's history reaches back to the fifth century. It served as the capital for the Kingdom of Tarumanagara. During that era, the area was known as Dayeuh Sundasembawa or Jayagiri. The name Bekasi has a long linguistic evolution. It is linked to the Candrabhaga River that flows through the city. In Sanskrit, the word "candra" means moon. This term evolved into the Old Sundanese word "sasi," which also means moon. Over many centuries, the name transitioned from Bhagasasi to Bhagasi, then to the Dutch spelling "Bacassie," and finally to Bekasi.

Administratively, Bekasi has undergone several changes. It was originally part of the Bekasi Regency. The city was separated from the regency on 16 December 1996. It was later inaugurated on 10 March 1997. Today, the city is bordered by several different regions. To the north and east lies the Bekasi Regency. To the south, it meets Bogor Regency and Depok City. The city of East Jakarta forms its western border. The city covers a total area of 213.12 square kilometers. Its elevation ranges from 11 to 81 meters above sea level.

The population of Bekasi has grown significantly over recent years. The 2020 Census recorded 2,543,676 inhabitants. By the mid-2025 official estimate, the population reached 2,648,272 people. Transportation infrastructure is essential for the city's many commuters. The Trans-Java Toll Road connects the city to the rest of Java. There are three major expressway connections from the Jabodetabek area. These include the Jakarta–Cikampek Toll Road, the Jakarta Outer Ring Road, and the Bekasi-Cawang-Kampung Melayu Toll Road. Rail travel is also very common. The KRL Commuterline provides a double track connection to Jakarta. Additionally, the Jabodebek LRT serves the Bekasi Line. This fully-elevated rail line is 29.54 kilometers long.

Natural features like the Kali Bekasi River shape the local environment. This river originates from the confluence of the Cikeas and Cileungsi rivers. These rivers start in the mountains of the Bogor Regency. The river and its tributaries provide raw water for drinking. This water serves both the Bekasi region and the DKI Jakarta area. However, the river currently faces pollution from industrial waste. Because the city is located in a downstream area with low slopes, flooding is a challenge. This occurs frequently during the rainy season in districts like Jatiasih and East Bekasi.
