Many bazaars have covered streets. Some even have courtyard buildings called caravanserais. These were places where travelers could rest. In the past, bazaars grew along trade routes. They helped link big cities together. People used them to swap goods and news.

In the Islamic world, bazaars became the heart of the city. They were often near the main mosque. Some markets were near the city walls. Others were built inside the walls as cities grew. In the 14th century, people built Khan al-Mirjan in Baghdad. It is one of the oldest market buildings left.
