In ancient Rome, these were busy public spaces. People went there for business or legal matters.

Most basilicas have a wide central hall called a nave. On each side, there are smaller paths called aisles. These aisles are often separated by rows of columns. The nave is taller than the aisles. This lets light into the room through high windows. At one end, there is often a raised platform. This is called an apse. In Roman times, judges sat on a raised seat called a tribunal in the apse.

Some basilicas were very grand. The Basilica Aemilia was called one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Later, the design changed how people built churches.

Many Christian churches used this same plan. They used the nave and aisles for worship. Today, the word basilica can also mean a special, historic church in the Catholic Church. Even though styles change, this shape remains very famous.
