Many dioceses are grouped into larger areas. These larger areas are called provinces. A diocese at the head of a province is an archdiocese. An archbishop leads an archdiocese.

The word diocese has a very old history. Long ago, the Roman Empire used it to divide land. As the empire changed, churches used those same lines. Some groups use different names for these areas. Eastern Catholic churches call them eparchies. Eastern Orthodox churches use the word episkopes. Some Lutheran churches also use dioceses. Even the Pentecostal Church of God in Christ uses them. They call their dioceses "jurisdictions." Each group has its own way to stay organized.
