The Battle of Wagram was a huge event in the Napoleonic Wars. It took place on July 5 and 6 in 1809. This battle was a major victory for Emperor Napoleon of France. His army fought against the Austrian Empire. The Austrian forces were led by Archduke Charles of Austria-Teschen. At that time, it was the largest battle ever fought in Europe.

The fighting happened in a specific way over two days. First, Napoleon moved his troops across the Danube river.

He wanted to attack the Austrian army quickly. The Austrians were spread out in a wide semicircle shape. They held a strong position on the land. On the first day, the French tried many evening attacks. Some of these attacks worked at first. However, the Austrian defenders soon gained the upper hand.

This stopped the early French breakthrough.

History shows how the war began before this battle. In 1809, France was very strong in Europe. Napoleon had many victories against other lands. But he was busy fighting a war in Spain. This made his military in central Europe weaker. The Austrian Empire saw this chance to gain power. They invaded the Kingdom of Bavaria, which was a French ally.

Napoleon moved to stop them and took Vienna in May. But Archduke Charles saved his army and moved north. He waited for his chance to fight again.

Many people and large numbers were part of the battle. Napoleon gathered a huge army of over 150,000 men. This army included soldiers from France, Germany, and Italy.

The Austrian army was also very large. It had more than 130,000 men. The battle was very bloody for the 300,000 soldiers involved. This was because of the many large cannons used. These cannons are called artillery. The fighting was intense on the flat battlefield.

Even the weather and the land played a part in the struggle.

The results of Wagram changed many lives. Archduke Charles eventually had to retreat from the field. He later asked for an armistice to end the war. Because of this, Austria had to sign the Treaty of Schönbrunn. This treaty was very hard on the Austrian Empire. They lost one sixth of their people and some land.

This made the empire landlocked for a time. Napoleon also honored his officer, Louis-Alexandre Berthier. He gave him the title of 1st Prince of Wagram. This made Berthier a member of the French nobility.
