The Austro-Prussian War was a major conflict in 1866. It was fought between the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia. Both sides had allies from the German Confederation to help them. Prussia also made a special deal with the Kingdom of Italy. This connected the fight to Italy's own struggle for independence. The war was part of a long rivalry between these two lands. It changed how power worked in Central Europe forever.

The fighting began because of a dispute over some land. This land was called Schleswig-Holstein. Prussia and Austria had taken it from Denmark in 1864. They had agreed to rule it together at that time. However, problems started in January 1866. Austria allowed a local assembly to meet in Holstein. Prussia said this broke their rules for sharing power. Things grew tense as both sides moved their troops.

Otto von Bismarck was a very important leader in Prussia. He was the Minister President during this time. Bismarck wanted to make Prussia the strongest land in Germany. He made an alliance with Italy on April 8, 1866. This deal encouraged Italy to fight Austria. Italy wanted to gain the land of Venetia from the Austrian Empire. Bismarck also knew that other big countries would stay out of the fight.

Prussia had a very strong and organized military. They used newer technology than the Austrian army did. This helped them win important battles, like the Battle of Königgrätz.

The war changed the map of Europe in many ways. The old German Confederation was ended by the results. A new group called the North German Confederation was formed instead. This new group included northern states but left Austria out. Prussia became the main leader of these German states. Austria also lost the territory of Venetia to Italy. These changes showed that Prussia was now a great power.
