The Battle of Austerlitz was a major event in the Napoleonic Wars. It took place on December 2, 1805. This fight is also called the Battle of the Three Emperors. It happened near the town of Austerlitz in the Austrian Empire. Today, that place is known as Slavkov u Brna in the Czech Republic.

This battle is very famous among history experts. They often call it a masterpiece of planning by Napoleon. It is compared to other great battles from much older times. Some say it is as important as the battle of Cannae from 216 BC.

Napoleon used a very clever plan to win the fight. He wanted to trick the Allied armies into attacking him. To do this, he made his army look weak. He even gave up a high area called the Pratzen Heights. This was a trap to lure the enemies into a specific spot.

He weakened his right side on purpose. He hoped the Allies would attack there to break his line. Meanwhile, he hid his main army in areas where they could not be seen. He also waited for Marshal Davout and his troops to arrive from Vienna. Davout's men marched very fast to help at just the right time.

Weather played a big part in how the battle went. An early morning mist covered the ground. This mist helped hide Napoleon's troops from the enemy.

When the mist started to clear, Napoleon saw his chance. He sent Marshal Soult and his corps to attack the center. The Allied center was weak because they had moved to attack the French right. The French forces swept through the lines and won. This victory allowed the French to capture thousands of prisoners. The Russian and Austrian commanders were defeated in this battle.

Many important people and large numbers were part of this event. Around 158,000 troops fought in the battle. About 24,000 soldiers were killed or wounded during the fighting.

The Russian side included many famous leaders like Mikhail Kutuzov and Pyotr Bagration. The Russian Emperor, Alexander I, was the supreme commander of the Allies. He and the Austrian chief of staff, Franz von Weyrother, fell into Napoleon's trap. This defeat changed the future of Europe very quickly. It made the Austrian Emperor, Francis, decide to stop fighting.

The victory led to the Peace of Pressburg on December 26, 1805. This treaty ended the war between France and Austria. It forced Austria to give up lands in Italy, Bavaria, and Germany.

Napoleon also used this win to create the Confederation of the Rhine. This was a group of German states that acted as a buffer zone. Because of these changes, the Holy Roman Empire became useless. Emperor Francis eventually dissolved the empire in 1806. This victory helped Napoleon gain much more power over the continent.
