It happened during the War of the Third Coalition. This war involved several large countries in Europe. The main goal was to capture an Austrian army. This took place near the Swabian city of Ulm. Many historians call this campaign a strategic masterpiece. It even influenced famous military plans many years later. The campaign changed how people thought about moving large armies.

Napoleon used a clever way to win the campaign.

He led a huge group of troops called the Grand Army. His plan used a large wheeling maneuver. This meant the army moved in a wide curve to surround the enemy. Napoleon wanted to strike the Austrians very quickly. He hoped to win before Russian soldiers could arrive to help. This rapid marching caught the Austrian leaders by surprise.

Before the fighting started, both sides made big preparations.

Napoleon had trained his troops at camps in Boulogne. He organized his men into seven large units called corps. These units could act on their own if needed. The Austrians were also getting ready for war. Their leader, Archduke Charles, tried to reform their army. However, the Austrian commander Mack made sudden changes to his troops. These changes happened right before the war began.

Specific numbers show how big these armies were.

Napoleon had about 210,000 troops ready to move. He also had a cavalry reserve of 22,000 riders. The Austrian army under Mack had about 60,000 men. These included 66,000 infantry and 9,000 cavalry. On October 20, 1805, Mack surrendered his entire army at Ulm. This victory allowed the French to move toward Vienna. They captured the city on November 12.

This campaign led to even bigger events in Europe.

After Ulm, a massive battle happened at Austerlitz on December 2. This battle caused between 24,000 and 36,000 casualties. It finally removed Austria from the war. The Treaty of Pressburg was signed in late December. This treaty made France a major power in Central Europe. It also led to more wars in the following year. The history of Ulm shows how fast a war can change.
