Napoleon's troops marched very fast. This was a clever way to surround the enemy. The Austrian leader was named Karl Mack. He stayed near the city of Ulm. On October 20, Mack had to surrender his army. This army had 60,000 men. The win at Ulm was a great success for France. It helped the French take the city of Vienna. Later, there was a massive battle at Austerlitz.
